About Us
Not a Bad Drop has been established to let you know what’s happening at Brown Brothers Winery in Milawa, north-east Victoria. We want to share the experiences of members of the Brown family from Australia and around the world and we hope our posts and photographs bring you into the heart of the action so that wherever you are, you feel you are experiencing the magic of Milawa and our wines.

John Charles Brown was never one for putting on show.
The title is best explained by this excerpt from the book of the same title by Keith Dunstan: “Now why the title, ‘Not a Bad Drop’? It comes directly from John [Charles] Brown. He must have said it more than a thousand times. It is a very Australian line. It was a self put-down and it gave nothing away. But then John Brown was a modest, even a humble man. He might have been showing a glass of the non-vintage Sparkling Pinot-Chardonnay, which won the 1997 Sparkling Wine of the Year award at the international Wine Challenge in London. Or perhaps it could have been the astounding 1962 Noble Riesling, the very wine that so many mistook for a Chateau d’Yquem. After receiving the praise, he just smiled, ‘not a bad drop’.
John C. Brown was never one for putting on show. He was large, unflappable and some would say stubborn, for when he believed in something he was not given to verbosity. Yet behind that bland exterior was one who was able to fortell trends better than anyone else in the wine industry.”
